
In addition to working on updates of its popular Google Cardboard headset and development platform, the company is also working on a new, standalone headset that requires neither a smartphone nor a computer, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Google has already seen significant success with 5 million of its phone-based Cardboard headset on the market. This viewer, which is basically a simple box with a couple of lenses in it, is a good fit for watching virtual reality videos and playing simple virtual reality games.
High-end headsets such as the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Playstation VR require that they be plugged into a high-end desktop computer — or a video game console.
Google’s new devices promises to be something between the two.
